Events HiCN Workshops HiCN workshops are held every year in December/January. Seventh Households in Conflict Network Workshop HiCN's Seventh Annual Workshop will be held at the Institut d'Análisi Económica, Barcelona, on 21-22 November, 2011. The workshop is being co-organised and funded by the Institute. The theme of this year's workshop is Bridging Micro and Macro approaches in Civil Wars and Political Violence. Sixth Households in Conflict Network Workshop HiCN's Sixth Annual Workshop will be held at the Universidad de los Andes, on 2-3 December, 2010 and will be organised in collaboration with the Centro de Estudios sobre Desarollo Económico. Fifth Households in Conflict Network Workshop HiCN's Fifth Annual Workshop will be held at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), on 1-2 February, 2010 and will be organised in collaboration with the German Institute for Economic Research, with funding from the German Foundation for Peace Research. Third Annual Workshop, Households in Conflict Network HiCN's Third Annual Workshop will be held at the Institute of Development Studies, at the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK, on 10-11 December, 2007. This workshop will focus on the relationship between micro-level conflict processes and institutions. HiCN's Second Annual Workshop will be held at the Institute for Development Policy and Management, University of Antwerp, City Campus, Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp, Belgium, on 19-20 January, 2007. This workshop will address key issues in the micro-level analysis of causes, functionings and consequences of violent conflict, with “the unit of analysis” as the central focus. Key-note speakers include, Stephan Klasen (Development Economics, University of Göttingen), Debby Bonnin (Industrial Organisation and Labour Studies, University of Natal) and Debarati Guha-Sapir (Refugee Studies and Epidemiology, Université Catholic de Louvain). Poverty Reduction in Conflict and Fragile States: Perspectives from a Household Level
Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association HiCN Co-Directors, Tilman Brück, Patricia Justino and Philip Verwimp, attended the Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association in Philadelphia on 7-9 January 2005. At the session, "Poverty, Inequality and Conflict", presided by Frances Stewart of the University of Oxford, Tilman presented his paper 'The Welfare Effects of Farm Household Activity Choices in Post-War Mozambique', Philip presented his paper 'An Economic Profle of Genocide. Micro-level Evidence from Rwanda', Patricia presented her paper 'Redistribution and Civil Unrest' and Frances Stewart presented her paper 'Policies towards Horizontal Inequalities in Post-Conflict Reconstruction'. These stimulated lively discussions with over 50 people attending. Discussants of the session were Klaus Deininger of the World Bank and Hartmut Lehmann of Bologna University. Making Peace Work, UNU-WIDER Conference On 4-5 June 2004 in Helsinki, the World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) held a conference, 'Making Peace Work', to increase the focus of economists on conflict issues, and to facilitate interaction between economists and other social scientists working on conflict and post-conflict reconstruction. HiCN Co-Directors, Tilman Brück, Patricia Justino and Philip Verwimp, and HiCN Affiliates, Tony Addison, S. Mansoob Murshed and Pablo Querubin, presented papers at the conference.
